Our History & Mission

In 2012, what originally started as a hobby project and community exercise group by Ashly Flecther quickly started to grow in popularity due to gained interest from the south Dallas community.

In an area already underserved with people living in poverty with limited incomes, resources, infrastructure, and viable transportation options, it was clear there was a real need in the community to have an organization that helps meet, address, and serve those needs.

In 2017, Ashly Fletcher along with Stan Hart, Stanley Harris, and Douglas Gipson formed and formally founded Bike Friendly South Dallas™ as a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization to address community needs while also providing bicycle and safety education.

In 2018, Cornerstone Baptist Church approached and offered Bike Friendly South Dallas™ a rent-free year in an empty building space. Less than a couple of weeks after getting settled, the board for Bike Friendly South Dallas™ received word that The Real Estate Council’s Associate Leadership Council was considering adopting the organization space as its community service project.

With Cornerstone agreeing that Bike Friendly South Dallas™ could extend their stay to three years, TREC eventually signed on, bringing to the project a $100,000 grant for renovations—plus in-kind donations. The result became what is now our We-Cycle Resource Center, which quickly grew and became what it is today, a community Resource Center along with an incorporated and equipped bike shop and service department.

Since then, the organization has innovated and developed new programs like its Earn-A-Bike and Hub & Spoke Program as ways to better provide assistance to serve the community and its needs.
